BIFA, in conjunction with the RHA, is actively supporting the Freight Crime Bill and is asking members for their support.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has stated that losses in 2020, as a direct result of freight crime, totalled more than £1 billion.
Freight crime is highly disruptive, impacting supply chains and businesses, and carries a number of consequences.
For consumers, crime drives up costs, which are, at least in part, passed on. For businesses, there are significant issues, including potential damage to business relationships and reputation, as well as the administrative cost of managing the loss, including the insurance claim. There are also personal consequences, particularly if violence occurred when the crime was undertaken, impacting their welfare and creating a negative impression of the sector.
Member Action Needed:
In conjunction with the RHA, BIFA has been actively supporting The Rt Hon Rachel Taylor’s Freight Crime Bill, which aims to make provision about the recording and investigation of freight crime; and for connected purposes.
BIFA is encouraging Members to write to their MP to support this Bill, to find your local MP, please click on the following link: https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP
The bill is due to have its second reading on the 12th September in the House of Commons. BIFA is asking its members for their support by writing to their local MP. You can download the draft template by clicking the attached link. Any further details and/or case studies can be included in the letter at the member’s discretion.
BIFA and the RHA are asking the government for the following actions to counter the growing menace of freight crime:
- A dedicated crime code for freight crime
- Tougher sentencing for offenders
- Government funding for NaVCIS, the police unit currently funded by our industry
